Writing About People You Know

October 9th, 2008 · 1 Comment

One of our blogging rules is:

Avoid hurting other people’s feelings. A blog is not the place to get even with others. Do not write personal insults in your posts or in comments.

and I’m proud to say that students have been following this 97% of the time.

But the times I’ve noticed when students break this rule is when they’re writing about their younger siblings.

Look, I know how irritating younger brothers and sisters can be. I have two brothers and one sister younger than me, and they drove me crazy when I was growing up.

But you need to be very careful about what information you make public. Imagine how they’re going to feel when they read what you wrote. (And even if they’re not old enough now, they will be someday.) Although it might not seem like it sometimes, they do look up to you. Just imagine if your older brother and sister wrote negative things about you in public.

No, I don’t want you to pretend life is perfect in your blog. But if you’re going to write about people you know - friends, family, teachers, other students - try to give a well-rounded picture of them. Okay, tell how they irritate you, but also explain what’s good about them and why you love them.

New Way to Change Your Theme

July 31st, 2008 · 3 Comments

One of the changes with WPMU I didn’t tell you about a couple of days ago has to do with the themes page. Before when you picked Design in the admin section, there would be a long webpage showing you a every theme that was available to you. That was not a good thing to have a bunch of students in the computer lab loading over a 100 themes previews! Now it’ll show you only 15 at a time, and you’ll have to navigate through the pages to see them all.

Another change is when you choose a theme you want to take a look at, you’ll get a lightbox preview of exactly how your blog will look. It’ll have your title on there will some of your latest posts. At this point, you can either dismiss the preview without changing anything or you can activate the new theme.

Adding an Image to a Post

July 29th, 2008 · No Comments

Here are step-by-step directions on how to put an image in a post.

Put cursor in front of the paragraph where you want your image to appear

Click the star shape

Click Choose files to upload

Select the file of your image, then click Select

Wait for the file to upload

Add information

Give the image a title. If you want some text to appear below the picture when it appears on your blog, type that in the caption box - but don’t make it too long. If you’d like to put more detail, you can put that in the description box.

Alignment and Size

In the Alignment section, you’re going to decide where you want your image to appear in the paragraph. I want my image on the right side and the text on the left side, so I clicked the button in front of Right. In the Size section, I choose if I want the picture full size, medium size or small. It’ll take up too much space and the reader will be able to see the picture in its full size by clicking on the picture in your blog anyway.

When you’re finished, you can now Insert into Post.

You’re Done (Maybe)

If you have more to write, enter in more text. Otherwise, press Publish.

Adding a Photo Gallery

July 10th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Here I show you how to add a photo gallery to your post as I did to this one about my trip to San Antonio. Remember if you want to add one to your blog, go ahead but remember to not put any names in your photo descriptions or have yourself being the primary focus of too many of the photos.
