Please let me know which book has engaged you so far? Also, let me know why that book was so interesting. What was the main idea? Did it have a moral? I can’t wait to hear from you!

I know that most fifth graders already know how to multiply. I asked my classes, “What is multiplication?” Most replied that it was repeated addition. Others answered that it was a faster way of adding the same number over and over. Some said that multiplication was putting numbers in rows and columns then totaling them up. All of these answers lead me to believe that they know what multiplication is. Not only do they know what multiplication is, they also know how to multiply and find the correct product. However, some students take a lot longer than others. I am glad that they can arrive at the correct product, but I wish it didn’t take them so long. Like Amanda, in Amanda Bean’s Amazing Dream, she realized that memorizing her multiplication facts made a big difference. She did not want to add over and over, or count and count and count. So now I ask you, “How did you memorize your facts?” Did you just study and study daily? Did your parents drill you? Did you use flash cards? Do you think you would be willing to volunteer and help others memorize their facts?

I am glad the first 2 weeks of school are over. I have a hard time getting through the first couple of weeks every year. I think it is because there are so many rituals and routines, procedures and rules, and names to learn. I must admit one thing, I really like all my classes and know it is going to be another great year. I love teaching and I can’t wait to get down to doing just that. Now that we have all had a chance to get used to returning to school, I hope you are all ready to learn. I sure am ready to teach!

How do you feel about 5th grade so far? Do you like switching classes? What is one goal you would like to reach this school year?
