One is Silver and the Other Gold

Remember this Girl Scout song about making friends? Today was the first day of school with 20 shining faces watching me and trusting me to get them through this school year.  A few students from last year walked by my room waving or wanting a hug before they begin their 4th grade year.  Old friends have been heavy on my mind and heart these last few weeks. As I was beginning today I wondered how I would impact these young children’s lives….an older friend and her husband left El Paso today and are moving to Lufkin, Texas to be near their adult children.  She has been a rock of faith for me to lean on since I was 7 years old. A few weeks ago we celebrated their long service and dedication to our church with dinner and sharing how they touched our lives. She touched mine in so many ways. As she and I hugged, good-bye was not a word we used, simply “I will see you again.” I wonder if I will touch a life like she touched mine.  What part of me will be left with these students? Hopefully I can give to these children what she gave to me these many years.

Nicely said. I’m curious about the title though since I don’t remember that Girl Scout song!

I remember the song and have heard Shay sing it with her Girl Scouts-”Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other’s gold”. I was thinking on Aug. 27th I was losing one dear friend, but making some new ones in my class-both are truly valuable-thanks for commenting.

Mrs.Rice your story was sad to me that your friend left and thank you for treating us the same way you treated your friend in the 3rd grade.
